Gill Gathercole at London Road Gallery

I work as an abstract painter, mainly in oils on a medium to large scale. My work is intuitive and emotionally based, I find excitement and freedom working abstractly as opposed to some years of working representationally. Influences of the land and seascape can sometimes be seen, also the circle and square as primal universal shapes are often referred to, holding for me a symbolism of female/male energy, yin/yang, the earth, sun, moon, spiritualism and rationalism. On another level my work is about exploring the dynamic between restraint, control and freedom/letting go. I like the following quote by Ivor Stravinsky, “Freedom exists in being able to work within constraints”.
